The electroslag welding (ESW) process has some characteristics of submerged arc welding (the gantry type submerged arc welding machine is more common for H-beam welding, and the cantilever electroslag welding machine is more common for Box beam).

Electroslag welding is the predominant method for casting welded parts with large sections (the Box beam line is the most widely used) because one of its key features is its suitably high deposition rate.
Benefit:
• Electroslag welding can have a very high deposition rate, no matter how thick the beam structure is, only one pass is required.
• Unlike SAW or other arc welding processes, there is no angular deformation in ESW because the weld is symmetrical about its axis.
• High welding speed and good weld stress distribution.
• Joint preparation is generally much simpler than other arc welding processes.
• The resulting residual stress and deformation are at low levels.
• Very low flux composition compared to submerged arc welding (SAW).
